Competition
Motors had its genesis with its founder and owner, Donald Koleman,
who has been an automotive enthusiast and car collector for many
years. The company got underway in 1984 and initially provided restoration
and rebuilding services for vintage cars.
By 1989, Competition Motors had turned out a number of vintage cars
which had success in vintage events, car rallies and concours. The
company began to specialize in the restoration, service, sales and
culture of Bugatti automobiles.
Over the next five years, the company turned out a series of concours
winning Bugattis taking five First of Class at Pebble Beach and
numerous other concours. The company's restoration and service of
vintage race cars brought its customers repeated wins at Lime Rock's
Vintage Fall Festival, Pittsburgh Grand Prix, Bridgehampton, New
Hampshire International Speedway, among others. Most notably the
Company services have produced two class wins in a Type 37A Bugatti
at the Monoco Historic Grand Prix, the 2003 Bugatti Grand Prix at
the Monterey Classics, a 2004 Monaco Historic class win, and the
coveted VSCCA 2004 Richard Seaman Trophy, all in a Type 35B Bugatti.
Within the last year our customer was awarded the Jean Bugatti trophy
at the B.O.C. (Bugatti Owners Club). The Company's customers have
also achieved numerous pre-war fastest times of the day including
hill climbs at Hunnewell, Castle Hill, Mt. Equinox and Mt. Washington.
Although a specialist in Bugatti vintage automobiles, Competition
Motors has provided service and restoration for other prewar and
post war competition automobiles, including Alfa Romeo, Amilcar,
American sprint ca, Aston Martin, BMW, Delahaye, Ferrari, Jaguar,
Lagonda, Maserati, MG, Mercedes Benz,Triumph and Indy two man cars.
The company's emphasis on Bugatti and other vintage automotive sales
has brought into the country and area many rare and superb examples
of Bugatti race cars, sports cars and touring cars.
By the late '90s it was apparent that the company's unique and engaging
location in a vintage garage in Salem, Massachusetts, was no longer
able to properly provide the space requirements needed. After a
comprehensive search for new and expanded quarters, the company
relocated to a 26,000+ square foot, modern facility with a showroom/gallery
in the historic city of Portsmouth, in sales tax~free New Hampshire.
